The Ferrovie dello Stato were born on July 1, 1905, from the fusion of some of the companies which up to that moment were running the rail services on the Italian territory: they were the Rete Adriatica, the Rete Mediterranea, the Rete Sicula and the Strade Ferrate Sarde. At first the main traction was the steam one, even if beggining from 1901 in Valtellina electric locomotives were working by triphase traction: this kind of power source lasted on may 25, 1976, with the conversion to the direct current of the Alessandria - San Giuseppe di Cairo line. Later the Diesel traction and the 3 KV direct current one were introduced; this last one since 1928 and it is still used today. In the latest years the construction of high speed lines at 25 KV alternating current was started. |
