On the Italian territory there is a great number of under concession railways, either narrow or normale gauge, equally distributed all over the peninsula. Many years ago numerous spectacular lines, such as the famous "Dolomiti Railway" from Dobbiaco to Calalzo, connecting Alto Adige to Veneto, or the Spoleto - Norcia in Umbria, were closed and substituted by the road transport. In the latest years the freight transport has been partly given to some private operators, which use personal locos or rented ones: some of these companies are already engaged on a network of their own with passenger services, as the Ferrovie Nord Milano or the Ferrovia Sangritana.
