The first experiments with prototype autorails go back to the 20's, with either narrow or normal gauge machines. Thanks to the fast experience soon the first serial productions arrived, with either Diesel or fuel autorails, these ones then no more produced. In the 30's the construction of the "Littorine" began, to arrive then at the ALn.772, ALn.880 and ALn990. The ALn.773, ALn.873 and ALn.442/448 for the most prestigious services arrived few years later. In the 60's the ALn668 were built: they are the most common Italian group of DMUs, produced in numerous series belonging to many different families, nearly all Fiat. The ALn663 were born in the 80's, then no more groups up to now, when the ALn.501/502, called "Minuetti", by Diesel traction, have been put in service.
